
We've all seen the acronyms that some building companies display to beef up their credentials but most of us probably don't know what they really mean.
Here are some of the accreditations from trade bodies and asscoiations we've spotted companies in the building industry publicising:
FMB Federation of Master BuildersThe FMB is a trade association which has been established for over 60 years. The Federation protects the interests of small and medium-sized building firms – it is currently the largest trade association in the UK building industry.
NFB National Federation of BuildersThe NFB is the industry’s longest established trade association which originated in the late 19th century. The NFB provide advice on legal, employment, taxation, health and safety, planning, environmental, technical, training and government funding issues.
GMC Guild of Master CraftsmenThe Guild of Master Craftsmen supports and promotes excellence with a rigorous selection procedure to ensure the highest standards. Guild members come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some are quite unusual, such as craftsmen in wrought iron, stained glass or thatch, others are traditional builders, plumbers or electricians. A growing number are involved in newer industries such as information technology and in the retail and service sector.
NHBC National House-Building CouncilThe National House-Building Council is the standard setting body and leading warranty and insurance provider for new and newly converted homes in the UK.
CITB Construction Industry Training BoardThe CITB are the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry, working to deliver a safe, professional and fully qualified UK construction workforce.
The CITB work with construction companies to help them improve skills to increase their competitive edge.
AIS Association of Interior SpecialistsThe Association of Interior Specialists represents the whole spectrum of those involved in the manufacture, supply and installation of all aspects of interior fit-outs and refurbishment. AIS members are throughout the supply chain - from main interior contractors to specialist fit-out contractors, from interior systems manufacturers to distributors, from space planners to quantity surveyors, and so much more.
The BIFM is the home of facilities management in the UK. Founded in 1993, the Institute provides information, education, training and networking services for over 12,000 members – both individual professionals and organisations.
CECA Civil Engineering Contractors AssociationCECA promotes the positive contribution that the civil engineering industry makes to the nation. The Industry is an integral part of the economy and CECA members construct and maintain national infrastructure which is fundamental to both the social and economic needs of the country.
FPDC Federation of Plastering and Dry Wall ContractorsThe FPDC is a national trade association with both specialist contractor and associate members that are involved in designing and installing internal and external build solutions.
CORGI Council for Registered Gas InstallersBorn out of the Gas Board as a membership of leading gas installers, CORGI went on to run the mandatory gas scheme for government for many years. Although best known as the gas scheme registrar, CORGI has offered other products and services into the heating industry for many years. Gas installers have been able to obtain technical manuals, books, magazines, warning labels, tools and insurance as well as attend specific exhibitions and events from CORGI.

CHAS Contractors Health & Safety Assessment SchemeContractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS). CHAS are dedicated to completing health and safety pre-qualification assessments to a nationally recognised and accepted threshold standard. CHAS is a founder member and current Chair of Safety Schemes in Procurement – Competence Forum or SSIP.
SSIP Forum acts as an umbrella organisation to facilitate mutual recognition between health and safety pre-qualification schemes wherever it is practicable to do so. It actively advises and influences clients about acceptable interpretation and appropriateness of health and safety competence standards in UK schemes.
It also embraces the core guidance on competence and training in the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.
